Does the return of Nasreddine Nabi gives Kaizer Chiefs hope ahead of a pivotal PSL match?
Following a two-week break due to a family emergency, Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi is scheduled to return. On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at the legendary FNB Stadium, the Tunisian tactician will return to his team in time for their Betway Premiership matchup against the reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
Amakhosi, who began their 2025–26 campaign with three straight victories under interim leadership, will greatly benefit from this development.
The Family Emergency That Kept Nabi Away
Nabi’s wife was tragically involved in a catastrophic accident in Tunisia on August 8, 2025. As soon as possible, the coach went home to be with her and stayed longer to help her heal. Assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef took over as team manager during his absence, a time that tried the team’s fortitude on and off the field.
Youssef later confirmed:
“Coach Nabi will rejoin the squad this week to begin preparations for the match against Mamelodi Sundowns.”

Chiefs’ Perfect Start Under Interim Management
Despite Nabi’s absence, Kaizer Chiefs have managed to keep their campaign on track. Under Youssef’s guidance, Amakhosi recorded:
-
2-1 win vs Marumo Gallants (9 August)
-
1-0 win vs Golden Arrows
-
1-0 win vs Richards Bay
This leaves Chiefs with 9 points from 3 matches, second on the log behind Sekhukhune United, separated only by goal difference.
With 4 goals scored and just 1 conceded, Chiefs have displayed a balance of discipline and efficiency—traits that Nabi is expected to refine further upon his return.
Why Nabi’s Return Is Perfectly Timed
This matchup with Mamelodi Sundowns is not just ordinary game. Against the defending champions, it is an opportunity to gauge the Chiefs’ development and a test of their title credentials.
After successful periods at AS FAR (Morocco) and Young Africans (Tanzania), Nabi’s winning record and tactical expertise make him an important player for this match. He may hold the secret to opening Sundowns’ impenetrable defense with his emphasis on disciplined squad discipline and fast, planned transitions.
Emotional and Psychological Impact
Nabi’s return benefits players and supporters psychologically in addition as tactically. On social media, chiefs supporters showed their relief, with some pointing out that although Youssef did a good job holding the fort, Nabi’s leadership is still necessary for long-term stability.
Others, on the other hand, expressed sympathy for his predicament and urged the club to give him more time with his family. The human side of football, where personal and professional lives frequently mix, is highlighted by this dual feeling.
What to Expect in the Sundowns Showdown
-
Tactical Refinement: Expect Nabi to reintroduce his signature pressing game, which could push Chiefs into more dynamic attacking phases.
-
Squad Rotation: Nabi may bring fresh energy by tweaking the lineup after three tight wins.
-
High Stakes: A win over Sundowns would cement Chiefs’ title credentials early in the season.
Fan and Media Reactions
There has been a lot of excitement among the football community. While media outlets emphasize that the Chiefs’ undefeated streak has created the conditions for a historic match, supporters are still torn between feeling sorry for Nabi’s personal situation and anticipating his tactical comeback.
One fan wrote:
“Give Nabi two more weeks off… as Amakhosi we’ll send our wishes.”
Another added:
“This is the biggest test yet. Welcome back, coach—now let’s beat Sundowns.”

With Nasreddine Nabi back in charge, Kaizer Chiefs’ upcoming clash against Mamelodi Sundowns promises to be one of the highlights of the early PSL season. His return after a family emergency is not just a footballing story but a testament to resilience, balance, and commitment.
