Historical Overview
The UAE’s national league began in 1973 with its first championship. It was originally semi-professional, but in 2008 it became fully professional under the newly formed Pro League Committee. Since then, the competition has undergone several rebrandings. It was known as the Etisalat Pro League, later the Arabian Gulf League (from 2013), and since 2021 has been called the ADNOC Pro League after a record sponsorship agreement with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.
The league currently features 14 professional clubs and is the highest level of football competition in the United Arab Emirates.

Club Performances and Rivalries
Al Ain is the most successful club in UAE football, with a record 14 league titles. Shabab Al Ahli (formerly Al Ahli Dubai) follows with nine titles, while Al Jazira, Sharjah, and Al Wasl have all enjoyed championship success in the past decade.
The league features several fierce rivalries. The “Abu Dhabi Classico” between Al Ain and Al Wahda is considered the country’s premier derby. In Dubai, matches between Shabab Al Ahli, Al Wasl, and Al Nasr are highly competitive city derbies.
Recent seasons have shown increased competitiveness. Sharjah ended a long drought with the 2018–19 title, and Al Wasl won their first professional-era championship in 2023–24. This shift suggests the league is no longer dominated by only one or two clubs, but instead has a broader range of challengers.
