Tuchel Claims England Played with Fear of Losing at Euro 2024

Thomas Tuchel has suggested that England’s performance at Euro 2024 was affected by a fear of losing rather than playing with confidence and freedom.

Speaking during an interview, Tuchel pointed out that the team’s cautious approach and hesitation in key moments reflected pressure and anxiety, which ultimately limited their potential.

“They have incredible talent and depth, but you could sense they were more focused on not making mistakes than on creating something special,” Tuchel said.

England, despite having a strong squad and high expectations, struggled to show their full attacking strength in the tournament, leading to disappointment among fans and pundits.

Tuchel emphasized that success in major tournaments often comes from boldness and taking risks rather than playing it safe. “At that level, you need courage — playing with fear rarely brings out the best in a team.”

Tuchel Ready to Bring Fearless Football to England in First Match as Manager

England’s new head coach, Thomas Tuchel, says he is determined to help the Three Lions play with excitement and joy — not fear — as he prepares for his first match in charge on Friday against Albania in a World Cup qualifier.

Reflecting on England’s run to the Euro 2024 final under Gareth Southgate, Tuchel admitted he felt the team played with too much caution and a fear of losing, rather than embracing the hunger to win.

“It was my feeling even when I was watching from home,” Tuchel said. “It needs to change. I want us to play with excitement, hunger, and joy — knowing that failure can happen, but playing without fear. Everyone should feel safe to express themselves and give their very best.”

He also praised Southgate’s work but believes there’s room for England to be braver and more fluid. “Gareth did excellent work, but at the Euros, they weren’t free enough within their structure to express themselves. We need to build stronger connections, more rhythm, and more togetherness on the pitch.”

Despite reaching the Euro 2024 final, England were criticised for their lack of attacking flair, scoring just eight goals from 6.15 expected goals (xG) in seven matches. In contrast, champions Spain scored 15 goals from 13.01 xG.

Tuchel is aiming to introduce a clear attacking identity for England, while also remaining flexible. “Offensively, we’ll work to put players in positions where they feel comfortable and can show their full potential,” he said. “But we also have to stay open and adaptable. Every opponent will try to find solutions against us, so we need to adjust — both in structure and lineup — to meet those challenges.”

History is on Tuchel’s side, with each of the last 10 England managers winning their first match in charge. The only permanent manager to lose his debut was Alf Ramsey in 1963.

Tuchel, who has managed big clubs like Chelsea and Bayern Munich, is still adjusting to the short bursts of time available with an international squad. But he’s already enjoying the experience.

“It’s a crash course in international football for me,” he admitted. “You only have 10 days with the players, but they’ve reminded me why I was so excited to take this job. The energy and atmosphere are great. I love being around players, sharing ideas, and adapting to their strengths and talents.”

England fans will be hoping Tuchel’s vision of fearless, attacking football comes to life when the Three Lions step onto the pitch against Albania.
