About AFCON 2023 Season
The 2023 African Cup of Nations, abbreviated as the 2023 AFCON or CAN 2023 and sponsored by TotalEnergies, is the 34th edition of the biennial African football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Ivory Coast has been chosen as the host nation for the second time, with the previous hosting occurring in 1984.
Initially planned to be the third edition since 2019 scheduled during the Northern Hemisphere’s summer to alleviate conflicts with European club teams and competitions, the tournament underwent a schedule change. CAF decided to postpone it to 13 January – 11 February 2024, as announced on 3 July 2022.
This decision was prompted by concerns about adverse summer weather conditions in Ivory Coast. Despite the shift in timing, the tournament retained its original name for sponsorship purposes.
This adjustment followed a similar move for the 2021 edition in Cameroon, which was also rescheduled to the Northern Hemisphere’s winter season for comparable reasons.
