History and Naming

Originally named Stade Kamanyola, the stadium’s construction began on October 14, 1988, coinciding with the birthday of then-President Mobutu Sese Seko. The project was a collaboration between the Republic of Zaire and the People’s Republic of China, with a Chinese consortium overseeing its construction. The stadium was completed on October 14, 1993, and officially opened on September 14, 1994, with a friendly match between the national teams of Zaire and Malawi.

In 1997, following the fall of Mobutu’s regime, the stadium was renamed Stade des Martyrs de la Pentecôte to honor four ministers—Évariste Kimba, Jérôme Anany, Emmanuel Bamba, and Alexandre Mahamba—who were executed by hanging on June 2, 1966, during the Pentecost. Read More
